Diabetes is one of the most common diseases that can affect anyone at any time. Diabetes accelerates aging; damaging the kidneys, cardiovascular system, eyes and nerve tissue, and increases cancer risk. Diabetics should watch their sugar intake so most know to steer clear of processed sweets like cakes, donuts, and cookies. But other foods that are high in fat, calories, sodium, and preservatives can also have a negative effect on your sugar levels. In this article, we share 5 worst foods for diabetes.

1. French Fries: French fries can cause your blood glucose levels to increase. This is because the starch in potatoes is made of long strings of glucose that breaks down rapidly in the intestine. As the starch is absorbed into the bloodstream, it leads to a sudden spike in blood glucose levels. A 2015 study published in Diabetes Care reports that greater consumption of potatoes, especially French fries, was associated with a higher Type 2 diabetes risk, independent of body mass index (BMI) and other risk factors.

2. Processed Meats: Some people with diabetes think that it is safe for them to eat processed meats like bacon, hot dogs, and sausage. But such meats are not safe as they are loaded with salt and preservatives. Plus, studies show that eating these meats is linked with type 2 diabetes. A meta-analysis of 12 studies concluded that high total meat intake increased type 2 diabetes risk 17 percent above low intake, high red meat intake increased risk 21 percent, and high processed meat intake increased risk 41 percent.

3. White Rice: White rice is one of the very popular foods around the world and especially in Asian Countries. But due to being highly processed, white rice can cause blood sugar spikes similar to that of sugar. White rice has a high GI score and lacks nutrients like fiber and magnesium.

The more white rice you eat, the greater your risk of Type 2 diabetes and the harder it is to control your blood sugar level. Instead of white rice, go for brown rice or wild rice that has high fiber content, which helps slow the rush of glucose into the bloodstream.

4. Condiments and sauces: Ketchup, barbeque sauce, teriyaki sauce, jam, and other dressings and sauces are usually loaded with high fructose corn syrup. Some research says that high fructose corn syrup is worse for your waistline and blood sugar levels than table sugar. So read ingredient lists and avoid any condiments or sauces made with this offender.
