Allergic reaction is the identification of inflammation or irritation to some part of the body, some people can be allergic to the regular washing soap which makes them have an allergic reaction on the skin after getting in contact with soap. Most people that have allergic reaction to soap are those who tend to wash their hands more frequently like health care workers. Even though soap allergy wouldn’t really lead to serious health issues, it can cause Undesired discomfort and irritation that could be prevented by following certain tips.

Symptoms.

Allergic reaction to soap is known as contact dermatitis, this skin condition is characterized by red rash that is painful and itchy, sometimes it can be accompanied with blisters, this allergic reaction typically starts to appear 24 to 48 hours of getting in contact with soap and could last for up to 2 to 4 weeks.

Causes.

Soap allergy usually occurs due to the fragrances and chemicals found in washing soap which triggers an immunological response. People that have soap allergy their immune system finds the fragrances and chemicals in soap to be a foreign sickening and infectious materials, this triggers an immune response which releases the chemicals the skin absorbed from soap which causes inflammation and the irritation that is experienced after getting in contact with the allergens. The allergic reaction can also be caused by sodium lauryl sulfate which is an ingredient found in soap that strips your skin of its natural moisturizing oils.

Complications.

Complications associated with soap allergy involve the scratching of the itchy parts of the son which can further worsen the situation and increase inflammation. Scratching the itchy parts of the skin can lead to a condition called neurodermatitis which causes the affected parts of the skin more leathery and thicker than the rest of the skin, people with neurodermatitis can also have permanent itchy dark patches of the skin.

Diagnosis.

Doctors can diagnose soap allergy by the appearance of the inflamed skin and by asking the patient questions about any recent changes in soap, detergents or shampoos. A patch test can be done to confirm the diagnosis, the test is done by applying a patch the contains the chemicals suspected to be the cause for the allergic reaction to a part of the skin, the patch then gets removed within 48 hours to observe any allergic reaction, the patient will be monitored for the following 48 hours to determine if there’s any delayed reaction to the chemicals.

Treatment.

The best way to avoid the allergic reaction is by staying away from the cause, switching brands that didn’t cause allergic reaction should be a step to take. Medical treatment can include orally taken antihistamines, topical ointments that contains cortisone, calamine lotions to sooth the irritation and cold compresses.
