Artificial or natural Flavors, what does it really mean?

When we go shopping or buying food we usually find labels and ingredients on each item , some of these labels says that it contains artificial flavors while others claim they contain natural ones . what are the differences between both and which one is better ? read this article to find out .

What does it each flavor really mean ?

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Code of Federal Regulations (Title 21), natural flavors are made of sources that are edible like animals and vegetables for example ,on the contrary Artificial flavors, have inedible sources which can be almost everything around us .for instance a Japanese researcher Mayu Yamamoto found a way to extract vanillin which is used for vanilla from cow stool in 2006, as mentioned by Business Insider.

But its important to know that manufacturers found a way to make Natural and artificial flavors in the same way using edible and non-edible sources .For instance the lemon flavor which is found in lemon can be made artificially from petrochemicals which are as harmless as lemon and you won’t be able to tell the difference. In other words natural flavors are not always the best for you .

There is no evidence to support the idea that natural flavors are healthier than artificial ones .Gary Reineccius, Professor of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota, explains that there is no need to worry about the health benefits as a flavor whether its natural or artificial will not add any benefit to your health “There is no intrinsic nutritional value in flavor.” So whether it’s artificial or natural, there is no nutritional difference, according to the professor.

But how can you know more about the ingredients while shopping ? how can you tell which item to pick ?
Food manufacturers don’t include all the ingredients nor the flavors on the labels as this will be in the hand of their competitors, moreover its known that the list of flavors is too long that they wont fit on a food package and if they did there will be so much derivatives that no one would be interested to read about , this will also add to the cost of the packaging which will increase the price of the food item itself .
