What is food intolerance? It is when the food you eat disturbs your body causing certain symptoms. It is different from food allergies since it is not caused by the immune system and does not lead to a sever reaction or the production of Ige antibodies that fight strange substances. The symptoms of food intolerance are much milder than food allergy and they usually take much more time to manifest. If you are suffering from some or all of the following symptoms, then you might be suffering from food intolerance.
- Feeling a pain in the muscles or the joints on a regular basis. This pain is called fibromyalgia. It may happen to different parts in your body and it seems like it is spreading to other parts of your body. It was found that this symptom mostly shows in middle aged women after eating certain foods.
- In some cases, the food you are intolerant to is carbohydrates-based food. This means carbs stay undigested in your stomach and intestines and get fermented in the process causing the disease, irritable bowel syndrome. Since food gets fermented it causes bloating, gases, diarrhea and stomach ache. If you have these symptoms then you might be suffering from food intolerance.
- Weak against the effects of coffee. Coffee is now a kitchen staple, a basic part of our everyday life. So, if it makes you, for example, hyperactive, nervous, sweaty, want to go to the bathroom too many times, have hypertension, then you might be suffering from caffeine intolerance.
- Getting severe headaches and migraines a few hours after certain meals. You have to keep an eye for this exact symptom because it is one of the most common and expected symptoms of food intolerance. And the culprit, or the food causing the intolerance here is monosodium glutamate, a flavoring used in making bouillon cubes.
- Feeling sluggish and sleepy even when you have already slept enough hours. Food intolerance might be causing you a disease called chronic fatigue syndrome. This disease makes you feel sluggish and sleepy most of the time.
- If the food you are intolerant to is gluten, the protein found in wheat, then the symptom you may be suffering from is hypothyroidism. Intolerance to gluten will lead to releasing Hashimoto antibodies making your thyroid underactive.
