Manners are the most important part in the process of raising a child. A mannerless child is often ostracized and people abuse the parents who breed such a child without instilling discipline and manners into him. No doubt that every parent wants to teach their kids the essential manners that will make them good persons in the future and this is the main topic of this article. Below we discuss some essential manners that every parent should teach their kids from a very early age to raise a good and well-adjusted child.

1. Teach your children to greet people by setting examples. Depending on your level of formality, you can teach your child to shake hands with adults who come over and your child should always say, “hello” or “hi” when someone visits so that the guest feels welcome. Also, greeting doesn’t stop at this point, when your child knows when to say words like please, thank you, and excuse me he will be able to get through life easily. These acts show they have courtesy, humility, and gratitude.

2. It is very important to teach your kids to wait their turn and not to interrupt other people when they are speaking. Gently tell them to wait until someone is done speaking, and then ask their question. Be sure and give your child your full attention when you are done speaking so as to reinforce the positive behavior of waiting his/her turn. When you are talking with your friends never allow your kids to interrupt you unless it is an emergency matter. To do this you need to teach your kids examples that show the difference between the rude and the urgent interruption.

3. One of the most important manners that you should teach your kids is good sportsmanship. Some adults act badly when they lose because of the way they were bred. After playing a game, no matter the outcome, be pleasant. If your children win, tell them not to gloat or show off, but to be kind. If they lose, tell them to greet the other child(ren) and speak well of them.

4. Teach your kids to accept compliments graciously and to compliment friends, family members and people around them honestly. This is not only polite but they’ll not grow up with a feeling of superiority.

5. Teach your child to respect differences. When people do things differently from your family because of diversity in culture, race, or religion, then teach your child respect. Point out how interesting it is or how different families do different things. Families have their own traditions or rituals, and it is important and has meaning for that family.
