Prof Yvonne Kelly, from UCL’s department of epidemiology and public health, who supervised this study says that after examining 19,244 families in the united kingdom , they found out that having an irregular sleep pattern can cause obesity in children more than just overeating .The results of the study were published in the American medical journal Pediatrics.

“We have long drawn attention to the importance of early intervention in tackling childhood, and indeed adult, obesity. The earlier the action, the higher the chance of preventing obesity taking a hold and adversely affecting life-long health,” she said.

She also mentioned that its important that parents are made aware of the consequences of this problem and that their children must lead a healthy lifestyle in order not to gain weight. the lifestyle changes might require time and effort but will protect the children from future health complications. Its not only about cutting on the sugar and candy but also establishing a proper sleeping schedule.

There are several health complications that can affect children on the short and long run ,some of them are related to heart diseases like high blood pressure . some of them can develop prediabetes s well which can lead to diabetes in an older age .moreover children who suffer from obesity at an early age can face health issue related to their bones and joints as well as sight problems and some physiological issue related to self-image.

How can you help your child overcome this problem ?

The most important thing to do is to show them that you are there for them at all times . children feel the same way as their parents feel about them and if they feel accepted by you they will love and accept themselves as well and this will help them discuss the problem and try to find solutions for it
Another important point is their parents must try to do some changes in their physical activities routine and eating habits. By involving the entire family, everybody can learn healthy habits and the overweight child does not feel left out.
