And they are the top reason why people buy potatoes. If you love French fries like I do, then I am sure you will love learning the following fun facts about them.

!- French fries are not French. I don’t know who ever started this name but the country that invented French fries is Belgium. And yes, even the French say that this is true.

2- It is the first reason why McDonald is so popular. People don’t enjoy any of McDonald’s dishes as much as they enjoy French fries. People love McDonald’s fries so much that almost 7% of all the potatoes grown in the United States are sold to McDonald’s. And McDonald’s sells 35% of all the French fries sold in the United States.

3- Every American eats about 15 kilos of fries a year. Yes, Americans do love fries and each one of them eats 30 pounds of fries a year.

4- It is said that French fries dates back to the age of Charles Dickens in the 19th century. There is a reference to French fries in Charles Dickens’ novel, “A Tale of Two Cities”. Charles Dickens described French fries as a, “Husky chips of potato, fried with some reluctant drops of oil”.

5- Thomas Jefferson used to love snacking on fries. In fact, Thomas Jefferson is the reason why America came to know French fries as he had served them in a dinner in the White House in 1802 calling them, “potatoes, fried in the French manner.”

6- There is actually a championship for eating French fries. In 1995, World French Fry Eating Championship was held in the United States, and the winner was a guy named Ed Jarvis finishing 4.46 pounds of crinkle cut fries in six minutes.

7- Although the citizens of US eat more fries than any other country in the world,
But Belgians eat more French fries per individual.

8- There is actually a French fries museum. The museum is founded in Bruges and is called the Frietmuseum. It is the only museum dedicated to potato fries in the whole world.

9- “I love you but don’t take my fries.” According to statistics, taking fries from your partner is one of the biggest reasons for fights in restaurants.
