Night is the time when most of us feel hankering for a bedtime snack or beverage and you can’t seem to shake that gnawing feeling of an empty stomach. At this time it is hard to decide which food you should choose to maintain a healthy diet. While some light foods can actually help your sleep, many others can disrupt your sleep, causing nightmares, an irritated tummy, and insomnia. That is why you should be aware of the foods that you should totally avoid at night and why. Here are the 4 worst foods that you can eat at night.

1. Dark Chocolate: Eating dark chocolate should be a daytime activity rather than one you do in the wee hours. That is because chocolate is a natural source of stimulants such as caffeine and theobromine that can keep you awake for hours after your bedtime by charging up your nervous system.

A good night’s rest is essential for building a glance-worthy physique. This is the time when a significant amount of muscle recovery occurs, and when the body releases anabolic hormones like testosterone and growth hormone. Snacking on foods that disrupt your sleep could very well sabotage your fitness gains.

2. Wine: Though you may have a few glasses of wine with your dinner and feel slightly drowsy, don’t be fooled. Wine along with other forms of alcohol can lead to a disastrous night of sleep. In fact, it might be similar to the sleep you get after drinking caffeine, in that it’ll keep you in the lighter stages of sleep for longer and might make you wake up more during the night.

3. Ice Cream: Ice cream varieties are often packed with sugar that can contribute to fat gain. The high amount of fat in the icy treat can also force your digestive system to do extra work to process the high amount of fat content in the food which in turn can lead to disturbances in sleep.

4. Fried Foods: Fried foods may make you feel lethargic after you eat them, but they ultimately will do more harm to your sleep than good. Foods like fries and chips take a much longer time to digest than other foods as it can take hours to fully digest something that’s fried and high in fat. When you go to bed right after you’ve consumed these types of foods, you may have stomach pains, cramps, and acid reflux, resulting in poor sleep quality.
