Ovarian cancer, stages, diagnosis and treatment

Ovarian cancer is the most spread cancer type among women. according to the statistics of the American cancer society, it’s the 5th reason of cancer deaths . the following article is a brief about the basic information you need to know about this disease .

What is cancer ?
The cells found in the human body divide and form new ones to replace dying cells, .in a cancer patient , the cells continue to grow and divide, instead of reaching the point where they die, they outlive normal cells and continue to create new abnormal cells, creating tumors which end up in the disease called cancer

What are the stages of ovarian cancer and what are the survival rates?
In the first Stage, stage I ,its located only in the ovary (or ovaries) or fallopian tube(s). it hasn’t spread to the near organs yet . in the second stage , stage ii the cancer will start to spread to the near organs like the uteras,bladder or rectum..etc. in stage three the cancer will spread to the abdomen and lymph nodes .Stage IV is the advanced stage of the disease, the infection will be found in the the spleen, liver, lungs, or other organs located outside the peritoneal cavity.

The survival rate is estimated as follows , according to the American cancer society ; Stage 1: 85-94 percent , Stage 2: 70-73 percent , Stage 3: 39-59 percent and in Stage 4: 17 percent. As soon as a woman is diagnosed with this disease she should start the treatment as to increase the rate of survival.

How is ovarian cancer diagnosed and treated ?
There are many tests that a doctor will ask you to do in order to have an accurate diagnosis of the condition , these tests may vary according to your condition ; Blood tests,Ultrasound,Laparoscopy ,Colonoscopy ,Abdominal fluid aspiration ,CT scan and MRI.

The first test that a doctor will do is a vaginal examination to make sure that there is nothing abnormal in the uterus or ovaries .also you should provide him with your family history as it plays an important role in diagnosis .

Doctors are the ones who will decide which treatment is suitable for the condition of the patient , there are different types of treatment including ; Chemotherapy ,radiation ,surgery to stage the cancer and remove the tumor, targeted therapy and hormone therapy.
