Over-thinking is a natural part of life for many of us, which makes them plagued by distressing thoughts and holds them back from the life they truly want to live.
Beating yourself up over a mistake you made it yesterday, over-analyzing things, worrying about what is going to happen tomorrow, can actually stop you from enjoying your life and hold you back from making something productive. To overcome this problem, here are 3 ways to stop overthinking everything:
1. Practice Mindfulness: Over-thinkers are plagued by their inability to live in the present moment. They always think about the failures of the past and the worries over the future. To overcome this issue, you need to pay attention to the present moment and to love it. And mindfulness can help you achieve that as it is a form of meditation where you focus on the present moment without judgment. As the obsessive, worrying thoughts come in, you acknowledge them, and then let them go, energetically releasing them and clearing your space. Mindfulness takes practice, but it is one of the best ways to stop overthinking.
2. Get Busy: Get your mind off of the thing you can’t stop thinking about by doing something physical. Get out, go for a walk, go the gym, swim, run, do yoga, or do any other physical activity, this is one of the best ways to distract yourself. In addition to physical exercises, engrossing activities that stimulate the brain can also be effective for redirecting obsessive thought patterns. Playing cards, drawing, painting, learning a language, or learning a new hobby can be great diversions or interrupters of these thoughts.
3. Enforce a Time Limit to Your Thinking: Thinking about your problems for long periods of time isn’t productive, but brief reflection can be helpful. Thinking about how you could do things differently or recognizing potential pitfalls to your plan, for example, can help you do better in the future. Incorporate 15 minutes of thinking time into your day. Set a timer, take a pen and paper, and for the entire 15 minutes, write down everything that comes to your mind. And once your time is up, throw the paper and move onto something more productive.
