Proteins are important to keep the body functioning, they consist of long chains amino acids which are essential molecules for different body processes. Protein goes in the creation of every cell in your body, your body uses it to generate tissues, generate enzymes, hormones and other body chemicals.
Indeed it is needed to build muscles, bones, akin, cartilage, hair and even blood.
Unlike carbohydrates and fats, protein is not stored in your body, thus it is important to eat protein rich foods regularly to constantly supply your body with this important nutrient.
Protein can be found in carious sources including egg, milk, meat, soy, fish, legumes like beans and lentils and but butters. It is also found in fruits and vegetables in small amounts. Here are common signs that indicate you are not getting enough protein.
1- Muscle Weakness.
Sudden muscle weakness or persistent dull pain can be a sign that your diet is lacking protein.
Protein is the building blocks for muscles, so the muscles suffer a lot when there’s not enough protein provided to the body through the diet. Men especially can experience muscle loss as they age, the muscle mass loss can be even more if not enough protein is being provided to the body.
Protein also is important for the body to absorb other nutrients like iron and calcium which are both important for overall health.
2- Weak Hair.
Your hair is mainly made up of a protein called keratin, and this nutrient is highly important to repair damaged hair.
Protein is the building blocks for all your body cells including your hair.
Each strand of your hair needs an adequate amount of protein to grow.
So when you ate not eating enough protein, your body will use the little protein it has for other important processes than the hair which will eventually lead to hair loss.
3- Fluids Retention.
Fluid retention in the body and especially in the lower part could also be a sign for poor protein intake.
Protein plays an essential role in preventing fluids retention in the cells by maintaining the water and salt held in the blood vessels.
Without enough protein, water retention can be experienced in the skin and muscle cells and especially feet and ankles.
4- Poor Immunity.
A low level of protein in your diet could make you more susceptible to diseases.
The cells that make your immune system are mainly made up of protein, hence not getting enough protein could make your immune system weaker.
Protein makes up white blood cells, red blood cells, antibodies, blood proteins and other immune cells like interleukins and cytokines. All those work together to fight foreign microorganisms or abnormal growths to keep the body protected.
Insufficient intake of dietary protein can compromise your body’s ability to produce immune cells and in turn weaken your immunity.
