Let me tell you a story: a guy I know took a liking (more of an addiction than liking) to videogames which require prolonged sitting. He Has been like that for about 10 years. Now he weighs over 150 kilograms, has varicose veins and experienced two strokes.
By the way, he is still 37, at what is supposed to be the prime of his youth. Where I am going here is that sitting for long periods of time is not healthy and can even be dangerous. When you sit, you burn no more than one calorie each minute. Your low calorie burn should not be the only thing to be concerned about with prolonged sitting. It can cause you several health problems as well, such as:
1- Prolonged sitting damages your posture. Yes, it causes back problems, pain in your shoulders and can lead to a spine misalignment that can damage your neck. And that is just the start of it. According to many researches, sitting for long hours can lead to developing inflexibility in your spine and herniated lumbar disks, rounding or hunching of the upper back, and lordosis.
2- Atrophy of Your Muscles. Yes, atrophy or muscles shrinking from lack of use can actually happen as a result of prolonged sitting. As you set for hours and hours, your muscles do not have anything to do, so they become inflexible. They can also lead to more storage of fat around them. Also, this way you are changing your muscles from muscles that are prepared to move into muscles that are better prepared to be still and move less. This makes any activity you need difficult requiring much energy.
3- Your Bones Become Weaker. Osteoporosis is a type of bone loss that is not just triggered by inflammation. Even bones need exercise, and lack of movement can damage them severely. If you are not moving around or standing up, your bones wont need to support and carry your weight, so they will get weak and brittle developing osteoporosis as a result.
4- It Impairs metabolism. Like we have said at the beginning of the article that when sitting you end up burning one calorie per minute. If this is not impaired metabolism, I don’t know what you can call it. When dieting, doctors recommend a bit of movement and exercise to increase metabolism and accelerate your burn rate. Prolonged sitting can lead you to obesity quickly through slow metabolism.
