Cravings are these intense feelings of hunger and appetite for certain foods even when you are not that hungry. Cravings are a common phenomenon for dieters, especially if you have been dieting for a while. There are many things that contribute to the feelings of craving, such as your former eating habits, lack of nutrients, boredom…etc. You can get rid of cravings with these helpful tips
- Make sure you eat enough. Eating a filling meal doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to eat too much or consume too many calories. For example, a meal made of two eggs, a slice of rye bread and a bowel of salad will give you no more than 500 calories which is a suitable amount for any meal of your day. When you eat enough, your cravings will diminish significantly.
- Make healthy versions of what you eat. So maybe you like apple pies and fruit pies but that doesn’t mean giving up anything close to them entirely. You can, for example, cut and apple in half, spread a spoonful of honey on the halves, sprinkle some cinnamon and vanilla on top and then heat it in a microwave. It will turn out as close as it gets to an apple pie but you will get rid of about 300 calories all concentrated in the sugar, flour and shortening found in the crust.
- Do not skip breakfast. According to many recent statistics, those who eat a fulfilling breakfast are less prone to hunger and cravings. Breakfast comes after long hours of fasting, so filling your stomach with a healthy meal is a solid strategy of getting rid of cravings triggered by hunger and lack of the nutrition you need daily.
- Observe your behavior carefully and decide what triggers cravings for you. Sometimes you crave foods when you are tired, and in this case your cravings are triggered by your lack of energy. In some other times you crave junk food when you are stressed or overcome by negative feelings, and in this case cravings are a defense mechanism. Knowing the reason of cravings is a big step in their treatment.
- Make your plates greener and smaller. Small green plates make you think that any food in your plate, other than greens, is bigger than it already is. This way you are psyching your brain into transmitting signals of fullness which will help in getting rid of cravings.
