Don’t worry because you are still pregnant, as the full-term baby is always healthy and fully mature. It is normal to be pregnant up to 42 weeks, but let your doctor know if any change has happened. Here are a few reasons why you should stay pregnant to the 40th week in addition to serious information about this stage.
Even in the 40th week of your pregnancy, your baby’s folds of the brain need more time inside your womb to mature perfectly. Such folds will help your baby swallow and suck effectively after his birth. Such a brain is still developing the connections of social functioning, balance, learning, and coordination that may need double that time to develop outside your womb.
His liver, muscles, and lungs become fully mature by the end of the 40th week. If your baby is born at the 40th week, he will be mostly in a good body and mental health and will need a few medical interventions if his movements inside your womb are normal until the day of his birth.
Your body adapts itself to the position of birth naturally at the 40th week and the uterus begins to reduce its size to push your baby into the pelvis. This will certainly cause heaviness down your tummy and pressure your bladed causing a frequent urge to urinate. Whenever your baby reaches the due date, you will experience labor signs such as break of water, spotting, bleeding, or abdominal cramps. When you notice one or more of such symptoms, call your doctor and head directly with your partner, hospital bag, and birth plan to the hospital.
In a few cases, the doctor resort to induce labor using different methods such as ripening the cervix, rupturing the amniotic sac, or stripping the membranes with his own fingers. Instead, the doctor can inject you with oxytocin through an IV tube installed to your arm to increase the frequency and strength of the contractions.
Through the 40th week of your pregnancy, you should relax and sleep as much as you can and walk for about 10 or 20 minutes daily. You may need to write down your memories and experiences about this pregnancy, especially if this pregnancy comes after an effort, to remember them at your coming pregnancy or to find memories with your kids even before their birth.
