There is nothing to worry about if you witness any cramps during the beginning of your pregnancy, because in most cases the cramps happen for so many safe and normal reasons due to the changes that your body witnesses during pregnancy time. Cramps are something that feels like menstrual pain, so it might be confusing for some women who don’t know about their pregnancy yet. So, if you feel any cramps and it’s not your period, it might be the time to run a pregnancy test. This type of cramps is called implant cramps, you may feel it after about one week of ovulation process and it happens when the embryo settles down or implants itself into the uterine walls. Implant cramps could be accompanied with slight bleeding, spotting or discharges that wouldn’t fill a pad or tampon. So, if you notice any heavy blood or if the bleeding lasted for long times, then it’s time to call your doctor.

Implantation isn’t the only reason of cramps during early pregnancy, but there are some other reasons like uterus expanding. Your uterus is expecting a guest and it does its best to provide a very comfortable place for your guest. At this point the uterus muscles will start to expand or stretch to accommodate your baby, theses expanding or stretching movements may cause some cramps for some pregnant women.

During pregnancy you will notice some hormonal changes and progesterone is one of the hormones that will cause some changes that may result in some cramps. Let me explain more, releasing progesterone during pregnancy will help the muscles of your stomach and intestines to relax which will slower your digestion process. Slowing your digestion process will cause some gas and bloating which will result in some cramps. Slowing your digestion during pregnancy isn’t a bad thing, because it gives a chance to your body to pass the needed fluids and nutrients to your baby.

Cramps could be also an alert for some something serious like miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. If you notice any heavy bleeding or spotting accompanied with heavy abdominal cramps or pain in the lower body, this could be a miscarriage and you should tell your doctor about these symptoms immediately to give you the right instructions that will grantee your safety.

Ectopic pregnancy happens when the fertilized egg fails to find its way to the uterus and it settles in fallopian tube instead. Ectopic pregnancy could be accompanied with abdominal pain, severe cramps in one side of your body, heavy bleeding or spotting, so if you notice any of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor immediately. Most pregnant women find out about this case in the first six weeks of the pregnancy and there is no reason to worry, ectopic pregnancy could be successfully treated if diagnosed early.

In general if you notice any strange symptoms or changes accompanied with the cramps like, fever, heavy bleeding, strange or unusual vaginal discharges or even if the cramps lasted for longer times over one or two hours, then it’s time to visit or at least talk to your doctor immediately.

Some women may witness cramps during late pregnancy or after the first trimester for some reasons. One of these reasons is called the Braxton Hicks contraction or false labor as some people call it, these cramps of false labor happen usually in the third trimesters due to the expanding and stretching of the uterus, so they are so normal, but if you witness any strange symptoms or if you have any concerns, you should talk to your doctor about them.

Preterm labor could be another reason for the cramps that you may feel at late pregnancy; usually you will feel the cramps in your back and abdomen accompanied with diarrhea and extreme fatigue. For sure, you should call you doctor immediately, if you witness any of the above symptoms. You may also witness some leg cramps in the second or third trimester and these cramps occur due to dehydration, lack of some vitamins or minerals.

So, what can you do mommies to reduce these cramps? There are some tips that I will tell you about that will help you to reduce your cramps, so let’s start. Try to have some rest and avoid twisting, turning or lifting heavy stuff. Following a healthy food system that is rich with fresh vegetables, fruits, fibers, protein and all the needed vitamins (especially calcium) and minerals that you and your baby will need during pregnancy time. Drink enough water and keep your body hydrated to avoid many problems like leg cramps for example. Reducing the salt amounts that you consume will be a good step to reduce the cramps.

Change your positions while you are sitting down to reduce the cramps. You can also try this one to make you more comfortable, set down and lift your legs up using small chair or pillow. Do your best and stay away from any stress or anxiety sources and remember to do some simple exercises like walking; walking will compact the cramps and it will make your delivery much easier.

Last but not least, always talk to your doctor and ask him or her about all the questions, concerns or even fears that you have in mind, get regular check ups to make sure that everything is going in the right track and if you witness any changes or any unusual things during any time, make sure to let your doctor know about it. Pregnancy is a great time for sure; you only need to know how to enjoy the fun parts and how to avoid the annoying ones.
