Any woman should think better before having a baby and try to quit certain harmful habits such as drinking alcohol, a medicine which may harm the baby and smoking. Smoking during pregnancy is one of the most dangerous things any pregnant can do as we all know that it can cause severe health complications for the baby both during pregnancy and after the delivery. The cigarette smoke is full of harmful chemical substances and some of these chemicals like tar, carbon monoxide and nicotine are considered as the riskiest substance for the fetus.
Expecting mothers who smoke during pregnancy are prone to experience an ectopic pregnancy. This is more likely to happen when the mom was smoking heavily in the midst of the 1st trimester of her pregnancy. Moreover, smoking in the midst of pregnancy will increase the likelihood of causing complications within the mom placenta. In fact, the placental difficulties are shown to happen in about 1 % of pregnancies. Probably the most common problem is “placenta previa” a condition in which the placenta partially or wholly blocks the cervix. Another serious problem can happen because of smoking in the midst of pregnancy is the decline of fetal growth and that results in low infant birth weight.
Unfortunately, babies with weighing less than the typical babies are prone to higher risks. They might develop exact diseases such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, or death. Also, some reports discussed the effect of cigarette smoking in the midst of pregnancy on increasing the possibilities of birth defects as cleft lip and cleft palate.
Moreover, babies with mothers who smoke cigarettes have a higher risk of experiencing sudden infant death syndrome. If ever these infants survive, they may well still incur diseases like asthma, behavioral difficulties, or understanding disabilities.
When it comes to the post-pregnancy problems, studies have detected that nicotine may be passed on to infant through breastfeeding. By doing urine testing, they proved the presence of nicotine within the babies system. And later it has shown that the percentage of nicotine found on babies who breastfeed to smoker mother is higher.
So any expecting mother who does not care about her own health and keep in smoking cigarettes, she simply puts her baby in great risks during pregnancy and after born. Any mother-to-be should stop smoking because her baby have the right to enjoy a healthy life.
