A new research claims that calcium supplement may not be good for the heart .apparently this should be a warning for people to think twice before consuming large amounts of vitamins thinking that they are only healthy with no side effects . the number of Americans who consume supplements is estimated to be 43 percentage of the population as stated by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Moreover its important to know that Heart diseases affect 370,000 Americans annually, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The study mentions that excessive amounts of accumulated calcium may damage the cardiovascular system as stated by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
People who participated in the study underwent heart scans which showed problems with the heart arteries along with plaque buildup which may be a risk factor . it was shown that people who consumed less calcium were 27 percent lower in risk compared to others who consumed it more frequently .
“Calcium supplements have long been questioned when it comes to the development of heart disease,” said Steinbaum, who directs Women’s Heart Health at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “It is clear that excess calcium, which is often the result of supplementation, can be dangerous for heart health. However, that statistic looked at total calcium intake in people who took in the nutrient from food and/or supplements.
Scientists advised people to discuss their daily supplement intakes with a doctor before using any .these supplements and vitamins are not safe as anyone can buy them over the counter without any prescription which may cause an incident of overdose or poisoning without one noticing.
Although calcium supplements can be linked to heart diseases, foods which are rich in calcium do not pose any threat and may in fact be beneficial to the heart According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation Another complication caused by calcium supplements is that its linked to kidney stones and their formation as stated by Dr. Howard Quinnipiac University’s Netter School of Medicine in North Haven, Conn..
Dr howard recommends the natural form of calcium to his patients all the time as to avoid the risk of overusing any supplements , the natural form includes vegetables especially leafy ones and dairy products like milk and yogurt or cheese . Products, as tolerated,” Selinger said.
